چکیده

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have the potential to provide critical support during crisis situations. Unfortunately, most GIS require expert knowledge to operate and do not support collaboration between decision makers. A human-centered systems approach was used to develop the prototype of a multimodal, dialog-assisted visual environment for geoinformation (DAVE_G) that will support collaborative crisis management by individuals without special GIS training. Since current research about multimodal map and GIS usage is at it’s beginning, an initial user study with the DAVE_G prototype was conducted. The goals of the study were to investigate the basic proof of concept, collect information about user performance, gather information about overall system usability, and solicit user reactions. The initial study indicates that novice users are able to learn generic GIS interaction functions using a speech and gesturebased interface in a fairly short time and feel comfortable applying them.

Human-GIS Interaction Issues in Crisis Response

Geospatial information systems (GIS) provide a central infrastructure for computer supported crisis management in terms of database, analytical models and visualization tools, but the user interfaces of such systems are still hard to use, and do not address the special needs of crisis managers who often work in teams and make judgments and decisions under stress. This paper articulates the over...

Geoinformation Technologies to Support Collaborative Emergency Management

In today's emergency management environments geoinformation technologies play a vital role, but their potential has not been fully exploited. Key decision makers usually do not have direct access to Geographic Information Systems and if they receive access, complex user interfaces often hinder performance for high pressure tasks. In order to provide decision makers with direct and easy access t...

Speech-Gesture Driven Multimodal Interfaces for Crisis Management

Emergency response requires strategic assessment of risks, decisions, and communications that are timecritical while requiring teams of individuals to have fast access to large volumes of complex information and technologies that enables tightly coordinated work. The access to this information by crisis management (CM) teams in emergency operations centers can be facilitated through various hum...

Supporting Effective Human Interactions with Geographic Information during Crisis Response

Human society is vulnerable to various crises, ranging from hazardous exposure, natural disasters (hurricanes and forest fires), to organized terrorist attacks threatening national security. Although geographical information are widely applied to critical decisions for crisis management, recent field studies have shown that GIS are rarely used by crisis managers at the time of actual crises, be...

Mobile Maps and More - Extending Location-Based Services with Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis

Maps are often used as decision support tools in both, desktop geographic information systems (GIS) and mobile GIS environments. The decision support capabilities of current location-based services (LBS) are limited to navigation support and database querying with no analytic evaluation of the attractiveness of alternative destinations being offered. This chapter demonstrates how LBS can be ext...
